# Managing variables in Toucan

We define **variable** as a value that can change, depending on conditions or on information passed to the context.

In Toucan, variables allow the following use cases:

* Display appropriate data for each user
* Contextualizing charts Contextualize charts according to filter values
* Make layouts and charts available in multiple languages
